Tips to Shoot Animals or Wildlife

Take perfect wildlife images Getting great shots of animals can be tricky, as they tend to move around and you can’t fully control the situation. However, follow these tips and you’ll have fantastic wildlife and pet photos in no time.

Blend in
If you startle animals, they are likely to run away, so try to blend into your surroundings and turn off yourflash. Don’t make sudden movements and try using a shutter release to allow you to sit further away from your camera.

Use burst mode
Set your camera to burst mode and hold down the shutter to take a series of images in quick succession. You can then select the best image of the bunch, giving you a better chance of capturing the animal’s movements.

Freeze it

To capture the animal in motion and stop blur, use shutter priority mode and set a fast shutter speed of 1/125 or more. You could also use Pet scene mode instead if you’re unsure of setting the shutter speed.

Utilise zoom
When you aren’t able to get up close, you may need to zoom in with your lens. Where possible, stick to the optical part of your zoom rather than digital, as this will result in a higher-quality image.

Compose
When you’re composing your shot, try to set up in a place without distracting backgrounds or with lots of wire fences. Take your photos through the fence if you don’t have any other vantage points.

Distractions
Example: The fence and the tree in the background take the attention away from the deer and make for an ugly photo

Upclose
Zooming in on the animal and carefully shooting through puts the focus fully on the animal.

Turning the flash off will stop the animals being startled.
