10 Billionaires Giving Away Half Their Fortunes

‘Wealth concentration’ is one of the hottest issues in Western economics. Today, the mean household income of America’s ‘one percent’ is over 75 times that of the bottom 40th percentile. That the supremely rich garner both attention and resentment from us lowly subservients is no new development, but never before have the numbers been so damning: 20% of Americans today own 89% of the country’s wealth.
Do the wealthy tend to use their power, influence and money for good, or does man inherently need rules like taxes and salary caps to prevent that power from corrupting society? Whatever you may have argued in PoliSci 101, it seems, empirically, that money has a powerful and potentially corrupting persuasion. Even the most charitable billionaires needlessly splurge on expensive real estate, vehicles, or jet flights par-convenience, and an affluent economy expects no less. But in the last few years there has been one interesting development in the opposite direction: some celebs are voluntarily signing up to give away their fortune.
The Giving Pledge campaign founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates invites the uber rich and powerful to pay out at least half of their wealth to philanthropic causes. It’s not legally binding, but it is a moral and very public promise that billions of your dollars will find needier hands when you die, at the very latest. Since 2010, it’s become fashionable enough to get 122 signees as of last year — nearly one tenth of the world’s billionaires.
Unfortunately, the pledge suggests nothing about the kinds of donations and the impact they will have, not to mention loopholes that let you donate to your own family-controlled foundations. This kind of ambiguity led late hardball hedge fund titan Robert W. Wilson to call it no more than a PR scheme. But even if it is just the latest yacht club in sheep’s clothing, at least it lets us put some faces to the action and suggests some accountability for wealth inequality. Take a look at 10 prominent billionaires who’ve made the high-profile pledge to share more than half of their billions.

10. Paul Allen

Via south-african-lodges.com
Allen relinquished his post with Microsoft in 1983 after being diagnosed with Hogkin’s disease. One month after the Giving Pledge launched in 2010, the mogul signed up to depart with over half of his estimated $16.2 billion fortune. Known for his lavish spending which includes one of the world’s largest private yachts (named Octopus), the Seattle Seahawks football team, and Captain Kirk’s chair on the Starship Enterprise, Allen has publicly vowed to leave the majority of his estate to philanthropic causes with an emphasis on non-profit scientific research. He’ll probably keep Kirk’s chair…

9. Michael Bloomberg

Via forbes.com
The business magnate took a salary of $1 a year while he served as Mayor of New York City (that’s rich peoples’ way of reminding themselves – and us – how rich they are). Standing behind Michael Bloomberg’s commitment to the Giving Pledge is about $34 billion and millions in donations to education and nonprofits. He’s made his belief in giving it all away very publicly known, summed up with the excellent quote “the best financial planning ends with bouncing the check to the undertaker.” His two daughters probably find his generosity sobering.

8. Warren Buffett

Via ndh.vn
Despite a net worth of around $58.5 billion, Warren Buffett lives in the same Omaha home he bought in 1958 for $31,500. He’s drawn the same base salary of $100,000 for the past 25 years from his multinational conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, and he’s reputed to malign new technology and luxury cars. Buffett’s life of careful frugality underscores the very business philosophy that gives him the means to blow his frugality by a factor of billions. He has pledged to donate 99% of his wealth by the time his will is read, 83% of which will go directly to the Gates Foundation. It’s only fitting, as he spearheaded the Pledge.

7. Pierre Omidyar

Via wikipedia
The eBay founder has some enlightening things to say about becoming, in his words, “ridiculous rich” very quickly. As he describes it, his sudden ability to buy “not only one expensive car” but “all of them” caused him to bypass the temptations of material splurging. This partly explains his founding of the OmidyarNetwork in 2004 — what some call venture philanthropy — which has committed over $357 million and counting to other charitable initiatives. Omidyar didn’t hesitate to sign the Giving Pledge in 2010, which came nearly a decade after his own personally stated commitment to give away the vast majority of his wealth.

6. George Lucas

Via georgelucasneck.tumblr.com

Once upon a time, Disney paid the creator of Star Wars over $4 billion for his company Lucas Films. But the film tycoon had already made a pledge to give most of it away to improve education. George Lucas’ signing to the Giving Pledge details an initiative to transform education from “an assembly line” to fostering experiences in arts and expression. Given his $175-180 million in donations to expand the film school at his alma mater alone, we reckon he’s pretty serious about this.

5. David Rockefeller

Via indianinthemachine.wordpress.com

David Rockefeller’s endorsement of the Giving Pledge nearly goes without saying. Heading a five-generation lineage of immense wealth and charity, The New York Times estimated his total personal philanthropic donations at over $900 million in 2006. There’s $100 million to the Museum of Modern Art, $100 million to Harvard University, $100 million to Rockefeller University — the list goes on. At 99 years old David Rockefeller may be the first billionaire on the list to fulfill his pledge, and with a $2.8 billion estate, that would be a philanthropic landmark.

4. Mark Zuckerberg

Via lifenews.com

Mark Zuckerberg turned 30 this year, but he’ll always remain the youngest billionaire nerd in our hearts. The only thing Zuckerberg did more quickly than making $33.1 billion was finding his philanthropic spirit: as an early signer of the Giving Pledge, he’s since donated 18 million Facebook shares ($500 million) to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and $100 million to Startup:Education to improve Newark schools. But he’s still got a long way to go. What will half his fortune be worth in fifty years?

3. Ted Turner

Via saportareport.com
While he’s amassed billions through founding media outlets like CNN and TBS, Ted Turner once joked his donations have left him at “the edge of poverty”. Unfortunately for his children, he also (jokingly?) plans to retain just enough wealth to cover his funeral when he dies. Making the Giving Pledge would surely help with that. Today he’s valued around $2.2 billion, but the real fruits of his fortune stand apart from his business dealings. Turner’s $1 billion donation to the United Nations literally created the UN’s public charity foundation, for which he now serves as Chairman.

2. Richard Branson

Via idreddeer.ca
The founder of Virgin Group took the Pledge just last year with a promise to help innovation and entrepreneurism. Branson’s net worth of about $5 billion makes him the sixth richest UK citizen according to Forbes. But he’s known less for his lump sum philanthropy than for his general activism, round-the-world record attempts and two private Caribbean islands. So, a promise to shed at least half his fortune seems like uncharted territory for the adventurous tycoon.

1. Bill Gates

Via telegraph.co.uk
Just as Zuckerberg will always be that young billionaire who gave us the technology to get super-social, to many of us Gates will always be ‘the richest man in the world’. He officially held the title from 1995-2009, and in case you’re wondering he’s only the second wealthiest as of this September. But does it really matter at this point? Bill Gates is said to be worth somewhere around $81 billion today, and since founding the wealthiest charity in the world (whatever that means), the mechanics of Gates owning his wealth and giving it away are confusing at best. What we can say for certain is Bill and Melinda Gates co-founded the Giving Pledge and have publicly promised to donate 95% of their fortune. We can only hope it’ll go to the right places.

Top 10 Longest Football Suspensions Ever

just as vital as sports heroes who are admired and respected all around the world are the true villains of athletics, men who elicit emotions of disappointment and even anger. Fans, as history has shown, will pay their money and tune in via television sets to watch supposedly reviled athletes “get what is coming.”
It’s the very business model with which Vince McMahon of World Wrestling Entertainment made millions upon millions of dollars.
World football has, over the years, seen its fair share of despised players, talented footballers who could not, for one reason or another, keep themselves in check at vital moments. One of the best goal-scorers on the planet today begins this particular list, which is a shame considering all of the positive things that he can achieve while on the pitch.

10. Luis Suarez: 4 Months

Via zuqka.nation.co.ke
The Liverpool star made worldwide headlines in the group stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup when he, while featuring as striker for Uruguay, bit the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. The offense itself is, of course, despicable, a completely inexcusable action that also happens to be assault.
That it was at least the third time that Luis Suarez had been caught biting an opponent during a sanctioned match left some analysts and commentators wanting the front man banned from the game for life.
FIFA, within their rights to keep Suarez off the pitch for up to two calendar years, decided that four months was enough. Suarez will miss nine Premier League matches and a handful of Champions League contests for Liverpool; that is, of course, suggesting that the Premier League side won’t sell Suarez off to either Barcelona or Real Madrid before the summer ends.

9. Vinnie Jones: 6 Months

Via enfilme.com
How much damage can one little ol’ video do? Quite a lot if those running football organizations are displeased with the film’s content.
Jones’ work for the infamous Soccer’s Hard Men video that was released in 1992 got the on-the-pitch bad-boy banned for six months, and it also netted him a then-record £20,000 fine. The Football Association also suspended Jones for three years.
As with Suarez, Jones was a repeat offender during matches. He was sent off a total of twelve times, and he was once caught committing what many male athletes would refer to as the ultimate no-no, grabbing the nether regions of Newcastle United’s Paul Gascoigne.

8. Kolo Toure: 6 Months

Via manchestereveningnews.co.uk

Message to any and all professional athletes out there: Always – ALWAYS – know what you are putting into your body. Doing so is your responsibility, and failing to keep tabs on what is in your system can and usually will cost you.
Toure learned this lesson the hard way in 2011 when the defender was banned for six months after he failed a drug test. Toure’s excuse for why he was popped when tested?
He said that he had ingested his wife’s diet pills.
Whether or not he was telling the truth is irrelevant. Know what is legal to take and what is not, footballers, and then follow the rules.

7. Adrian Mutu: 6 Months

Via pixmule.com

Get used to seeing Mutu’s name on the list. The troubled striker was nailed for a positive doping test in the winter of 2010, not the first time that substances banned in world football were detected in his system.
This time, Mutu was banned for half of a calendar year.
Mutu, like Suarez and Jones, is an example of what happens when an athlete who commits offenses against the laws of the game simply doesn’t get it. Yes, Mutu is a figure who needed serious and real treatment years ago, but a person has to want to receive the help for it to work.

6. Adrian Mutu: 7 Months

Via gsp.ro
The 35-year-old Romanian who has struggled to defeat his demons throughout his adult life failed a drug test for cocaine in 2004. Chelsea, a club with a zero-tolerance policy concerning the use of drugs, sacked Mutu on the grounds of “gross misconduct.” The two parties also battled in court over Chelsea seeking compensation from the player.
Chelsea weren’t the only organization to hit Mutu. The FA sat the striker for seven months. Mutu was also fined £20,000.

5. Rio Ferdinand: 8 Months

Via europafoot.com
Word to the wise for athletes everywhere: Just as important as knowing what goes into your system is showing up for those pesky doping tests. The authorities frown upon players that miss such tests, suspecting that the individual in question may be ducking his moment under the spotlight.
Ferdinand, to his credit, provided a clean sample two days after he was supposed to take his test. That proved to be nothing more than a matter of “too little, too late.” Ferdinand was banned for eight months and fined £50,000, a punishment Manchester United claimed to be “particularly savage.”

4. Mark Bosnich: 9 Months

Via manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Some athletes will, when popped with a positive drug test, fall on their proverbial swords and hope to come back better than ever. Others, however, will cling to an excuse in a feeble attempt to avoid the inevitable. Bosnich chose the latter when he failed a drug test for cocaine in 2002, claiming that a drink of his had been spiked.
The truth, as often is the case, eventually came out. In 2003 Bosnich would admit to a $5000-a-week cocaine habit. Following a retirement from professional football, Bosnich returned to the sport via the A-League in 2008.

3. Eric Cantona: 9 Months

Via huffingtonpost.co.uk

It is perhaps the most famous “kung-fu style” kick to occur in a sporting even that was not a version of mixed martial arts. Cantona, during a match that took place in January of 1995, was the subject of verbal abuse from a Crystal Palace fan. Noticing that the fan was within his reach, Cantona, having been sent off for kicking an opponent, launched both feet at his heckler, making contact with the man.
Cantona was obviously out of line in this situation, but this, along with other similar incidents (the “Malice at the Palace” will come to mind for American sports fans), brings with it discussions on when fans who attend events are no longer merely bystanders. Fans who hurl racist or discriminatory insults toward players, and also those who throw items onto a playing field, are far from innocent, and it’s hard to feel sorry for them should a player react as did Cantona.

2. Diego Maradona: 15 Months

Via sport.gentside.com
Maradona is seen by many experts as the greatest footballer to ever lace up a pair of boots. The Argentinian living legend was also a man who struggled with addiction for many years. Maradona failed a drug test for cocaine in 1991, an offense that landed him banned for 15 months.
His story does have somewhat of a happy ending. Maradona would eventually get the help that he needed, kicking his cocaine and drinking habits for good. The shame is that treatment came only after his international career ended in shame.

1. Diego Maradona: 15 Months

Via reddit.com

The 1994 FIFA World Cup was to be the last time Maradona would feature at the competition. The 33-year-old captain of the Argentina squad was sent home early, however, after he tested positive for multiple variants of the stimulant ephedrine.
Maradona’s drug use during and after his playing days has been well documented. That he is still with us is a minor miracle. So many others, athletes and non-athletes, have not been so lucky to escape their addictions before it was too late.
